Capoeira songs can be categorized under Ladainhas, Canto de Entrada, Corridos, and Cantigas de Despedida.

It must be noted that, these lyrics are not rigid.  Much on the contrary, their verses are very flexible as for the order in which they are sung.  They can be repeated a variable number of times and can appear within other song's lyrics, as well.  The words can change and must be improvised in accord to the current game.  While singing for a game, a master sends messages in the form of symbols, imageries and references.  Often, only his disciples will understand the underlying meaning of his words.  There is, therefore, a direct relation between the music and the game being played.  Not only do the lyrics send out messages, but they can also control a fight or they may describe interactions between the two fighters. Also, it can be noted that different lyrics are sung under the same melodies and the exact same lyrics under different melodies.

As a matter of fact, many authorities of today's Capoeira criticize the current loss in creativity and improvising of the music in rodas and classes.  During classes, for example, the berimbau has lost its place for the use of tapes and CDs.  Overall, the consequent standardization and lack of variety in Capoeira music is easily seen.
